THE Black Isle Men’s Shed project has been given a major boost thanks to donations and the offer of free building materials.

The project, part of a concept that has gained a worldwide following, helps to tackle social isolation and has been credited with improving the overall health of men by bringing them together to pursue practical interests, practice skills and enjoy making and mending.

The formal opening of the Black Isle Men’s Shed (Bims) took place in Avoch last Saturday, headed up by Dr Ann Blatt who is supporting the project in memory of her late husband, Victor, in whose name the shed is commemorated.

Chairman Stewart Robertson thanked the many sponsors for their donations and local firms for their professional advice and materials. He said: "The shed is a place where people can have fun and develop friendships while working on their own or communal projects.

"Social isolation, particularly after retirement, is known to cause ill-health and loneliness but this can be alleviated by the friendly and productive environment of a men’s shed."

The opening was attended by more than 100 members of the public, shed members and friends from other nearby shed groups.

An opportunity was provided to those attending to try out the facilities and equipment.

The facility can be found in Avoch Community Centre. To join email Secretary@bimshed.uk or call 01381 621945.
