The tongue-in-cheek bid to banish the Brexit blues at Rosemarkie Beach Café over the festive season saw customers warned they’d face a £1 fine if they so much as mentioned a word seldom out of the headlines lately.

Philip Eley, the long-standing café manager, explained. “It’s just grim. People are so depressed. Folk come to the beach to get away from all those headlines about what the idiots in Westminster are up to, but it only takes one person to mention the B-word to ruin everyone else’s bacon roll.”

Customers warmed to the idea and willingly dropped contributions in the bucket during visits to the Black Isle beauty spot.

Mr Eley’s partner, Verity Walker, made good on a promise to donate takings from the offbeat bucket collection to the Maggie’s Highlands cancer care centre at Raigmore Hospital. It was gratefully accepted by fundraising manager David Walker, who is no relation. Ms Walker said: “We finally got the donations bucket and collecting can to the Maggie’s Centre at Raigmore – they were quite heavy as we kept them on the counter a bit longer and you just kept on giving!

“Maggie’s has helped a number of café customers and staff. They exist to support those who are affected by cancer, but that includes the families of those diagnosed. If you have never been in, please go and visit, it’s a lovely calm space amid the hustle and bustle of Raigmore.”
