An Inverness baker is going the extra mile to make sure runners have something to celebrate with after crossing the finish line in Sunday's half marathon.

As first revealed by the Inverness Courier, a delay to the shipment of medals and T-shirts for the Inverness Half Marathon and 5K due to Houthi rebel attacks on ships in the Red Sea means the usual mementos will now be sent out by post at a later date.

But Harry Gow thought that was taking the biscuit – and decided to do something about it.

Fraser Gow, director at the city bakery, said: “We are really excited to bring something a bit different to Inverness Half Marathon and 5K this year with our commemorative biscuits.

"Our bakers are putting in their own marathon effort to produce these special sweet treats for runners on Sunday. Whether you’re taking part in the half marathon or 5K, we hope this gives you all a little boost!”

Runners of all ages from one to 80 will be taking part in the sold-out events on Sunday, with more than 4200 set to join the runs in total.

The commemorative biscuits they will each receive at the end reflect the medal design and incorporate the event logo.

Malcolm Sutherland, event director of Inverness Half Marathon and 5K, said: “We’re excited to welcome runners of all ages and abilities to the Highland capital this Sunday for both the Half Marathon and 5K, and it’s really encouraging to have so many schools and youth groups sign-up for the 5K.

“A special thank you must go to Harry Gow for stepping in to create a special medal-style biscuit when our original medal delivery was delayed.

Some minor changes have been made to the route for this year’s event due to ongoing works at Riverside Way and Burn Road. The route has been remeasured and certified by scottishathletics, while extra marshals and signage will be in place on race day to assist and guide runners.

The prize-giving presentation will be given by the Provost of Inverness, Councillor Glynis Sinclair, who said: “I look forward to welcoming all the runners to Inverness on Sunday. As one of the first major sporting events of the year, Inverness Half Marathon and 5K always creates a great buzz around the city.

"I hope everyone taking part has a fantastic day – good luck!”
