NEW bike racks will help encourage more people to cycle to work at High Life Highland's Dingwall office, the charity believes.

It recently received grants from Cycling Scotland to install bike racks at its Dingwall and Inverness offices, meaning that workers and visitors to the Old Library in Dingwall will have a secure place in which to leave their bikes while they are in the building.

Steve Walsh, the chief executive of High Life Highland, said: “We are delighted that the funding from Cycling Scotland has enabled us to improve the facilities at the two main High Life Highland offices.

"With our organisation’s focus on promoting and encouraging health and wellbeing throughout the whole of the Highlands, it is great that we are now able to support our own staff and visitors to travel by bicycle to our offices.

"We are pleased that this has been recognised by Cycling Scotland with a Cycling Friendly Employer Award for both the Inverness and Dingwall offices.”

The grants were made available through Cycling Scotland’s Cycling Friendly Employer Development Grant scheme. Cycling Scotland has also confirmed both offices as recipients of the Cycling Friendly Employer award.

Nathalie Libera, development officer at Cycling Scotland, said: “High Life Highland has been working hard to support more people to cycle, and these new cycle racks at the Inverness and Dingwall offices are just part of their journey to become a Cycling Friendly organisation.

"It’s so encouraging to see the steps that High Life Highland is taking to make it easier and more accessible for staff to cycle, supporting their health, wellbeing and the environment by choosing to travel by bike.

"Our employer fund offers up to £25,000 for organisations to install facilities such as showering areas and bike shelters at their workplaces, and we’d encourage any organisation looking to support their staff to cycle to apply.”

Employers across Scotland can work towards the Cycling Friendly Employer Award with help from Cycling Scotland’s Cycling Friendly Employer development grant. The grant aims to encourage and support workplaces to take a leading role in increasing the number of journeys by bike to, from and for work.

There are many ways that cycling can benefit both employers and employees including reduced sickness absence, increased productivity, and saving on expenses by encouraging colleagues to use a bike to travel short distances to meetings or between work sites.
