THE agency responsible for looking after the trunk roads across a large area of the Highlands is reporting heavy snow on some of its northern routes this evening.

BEAR Scotland manage & maintain the North West Trunk Road Unit on behalf of Transport Scotland.

A weather warning for snow and ice was earlier today extended and takes in several periods between now and Friday evening.

It posted: "Heavy snow on some of our northern routes just now, particularly on A9, A835 and A87. We're treating, patrolling and monitoring all routes 24/7."

It again urged road users to "please drive safe if out".

Traffic Scotland tweeted: "A cold night ahead tonight with temperatures set to drop overnight."

Its gritter tracker map shows operators patrolling the A835 at Loch Droma and the A9 near Lybster and the Nigg roundabout.

Highland police meanwhile tonight issued an alert to motorists to avoid the area around the A87 near Drumuie, Isle of Skye, "as road conditions are dangerous due to heavy snow".

They added: "Be aware of the weather warnings in place."
