A TV presenter who helps to host the BBC's famous nature programme Springwatch has urged people to support recovery efforts following a devastating wildfire in the Highlands near Cannich.

Megan McCubbin took to Twitter over the weekend to urge people to support an emergency appeal by the RSPB that the charity launched after the wildfire devastated more than half of its Corrimony nature reserve last week.

The wildfire, which is estimated to have consumed dozens of square kilometres of moor and woodland, was still being fought by firefighters on Monday morning – almost two weeks after it first broke out.

At one point the smoke from the mammoth blaze was visible from space – and captured in images by NASA satellites.

The RSPB says it has been devastating for the reserve's wildlife and flora and has ripped through moorland where ground nesting birds such as Black Grouse are found.

Ms McCubbin, who has co-hosted Springwatch, Autumnwatch and Winterwatch since 2020 and co-presented Chris and Meg's Wild Summer in 2021 alongside her stepfather, the famous naturalist and TV presenter Chris Packham, said: "Shocking to see the wildfire that has spread through RSPB Corrimony.

"Sending all my love to the team over there. Please support in any way you can.

"And secondly, please please don’t light any camp fires."

Meanwhile, firefighters remained on the scene of the blaze on Monday morning.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that two fire appliances, a water carrier, and a welfare unit for the tireless crews were still involved in tackling the fire. The service were unable to give details as to the size of the area still alight, or where in the wider Cannich and Corrimony area that the firefighters were specifically deployed.
