A Ross-shire motorist braked sharply while negotiating a junction and it ultimately cost him his driving licence for two years.

Police saw 33-year-old Gavin Thomson's manoeuvre in Nelson Street, Inverness on July 25 last year and stopped his car in Portland Place, the city's sheriff court heard.

Fiscal depute Susan Love told Inverness Sheriff Court: "He was nervous and shaking and officers suspected drugs were involved. A saliva test proved positive for drugs and a blood test was later taken."

Ms Love said the reading for Thomson, of Townlands Park, Cromarty, was over four and a half times the permitted level for safe driving at 232 mcgs of a cocaine derivative when the limit is 50mcgs.

Defence solicitor advocate Neil Wilson said his client had already been punished by the DVLA who revoked his driving licence last year after he was charged with drug-driving, which Thomson admitted.

Sheriff Ian Cruickshank took that into account and, despite the high reading, banned Thomson for a further year and fined him £500.
