British Airways (BA) is cutting flights between Inverness and London from two a day to one daily this winter, leaving some customers in the lurch.

The Inverness Courier contacted BA for comment after a local man got in touch to say that his booked flight from Inverness at 6.35am on November 24 to London Heathrow had been cancelled meaning he could not connect with the BA flight out of Heathrow to South Korea.

"I have had to cancel this holiday as there was no alternative connection that suited me," he said. "It's ironic that they are losing my fare to South Korea as well."

The reduced service will take effect between Inverness and London from the start of the winter season on October 29.

A spokesman said: "We regularly review our schedule and for commercial reasons, we have made the decision to reduce our flights to Inverness to a daily one rotation service.

"We're contacting affected customers to apologise and offer them alternative options, including rebooking or a full refund."

BA flights between Inverness and Heathrow will therefore no longer allow workers from Inverness to travel to the UK capital and back in the same day.

Another disgruntled Inverness traveller said: "I had booked flights to go from Inverness to Heathrow the first weekend in November, but my early evening flight with BA was changed by around four hours leaving early afternoon instead, and my Sunday evening flight back was changed from around 7pm to 9.25 in the morning!

"I'm not sure just exactly what is happening here but we seem to be losing flights at a considerable rate of knots, all to benefit the airlines and without a thought to passengers."

In May last year there was concern when BA British Airways announced that it is reducing the number of flights between Inverness and Heathrow.

The change saw them use bigger aircraft by merging low occupancy flights and flights to destinations with multiple services each day.

BA said then that the move comes after a challenging time for the industry and it hoped the change would provide more consistency for customers.
