AN AWARD-WINNING police officer takes over a new beat in Ross-shire this week.

PC Gary Taylor takes over his new post as community officer in Lochcarron.

PC Taylor replaces former Lochcarron officer PC Joanna MacKinnon, who has recently been posted to Alness.

The 47-year-old has been a police officer with Northern Constabulary for over 16 years.

He started his career in Inverness and after five years service there moved to Kirkwall, Orkney.

In 2006 he returned to Inverness and in 2007 was made the Hilton community beat officer.

He said: "This was a challenging role, which involved working with local schools, community councils and other agencies, but at the same time was very rewarding.

"During my time within Hilton beat I received an area commander's commendation for my detection of a series of vandalisms which had taken place in the area. Then in 2011, I was awarded the annual Ewan Macrae Memorial Trophy for my work within the community in Hilton.

"I am looking forward to the new challenges which I will face in my new role in Lochcarron."

He moves to Lochcarron with his fiancé Eilidhmaria McKee. Both looking forward to settling into what PC Taylor describes as "a beautiful part of the country".
