A ROSS gallery which switched to online exhibitions for the duration of the ongoing lockdown has opened its second event.
The second exhibition in An Talla Solais' online programme went live at the weekend – this time with a link to the Arctic Convoys of World War II.
Entitled JW58, the Ullapool gallery's exhibition features a series of paintings by the artist Susie Reade which were inspired by a journey her mother took 75 years ago.
Exploring a journey from Loch Ewe to Moscow through diaries and paintings, the exhibition is showing online now at www.antallasolais.org
Victoria Caine, developmental curator at the gallery, said: "A collaboration between mother and daughter, JW58 is about two journeys; the journey taken by Lavinia Ponsonby in 1944, and also the journey taken 75 years later by her daughter, Susie Reade.
"Reade’s motivation was to discover more about a time in her mother’s life that she knew only from diaries written at the time. Her paintings are a direct response to the thoughts and observations in the diaries and create a fascinating narrative of what would have faced those travelling in the Arctic convoy at that time.
"Reade does not romanticise the journey, however daring it was. Instead she presents an often stark, visual record in a monotone palette through which we can sense the bleakness of the surrounding sea and landscapes, and their inhospitable nature (on many levels). "
She added: "While we may be unable to show work in our Gallery for some time, we hope that this exhibition takes you on a marvellous virtual journey and whets your appetite for your own future discoveries and adventures beyond our current confines."
