AN Alness fish processor which witnessed booming business demand during the coronavirus crisis is hoping to build a new extension at its Teaninich Industrial Estate plant.

Aquascot, which employs more than 170 people, has applied to Highland Council to build the new construction which would form a new chilled area for goods.

The site covers an area of 5251 square metres and its existing use was described as a fish processing facility in the application form. If approved the development would provide an additional floor space which covers an area of 179 square metres.

The employee-owned firm, which has been processing salmon and trout for more than 30 years, saw business boom during the first lockdown from clients like Waitrose catering to an increasing number of people eating at home.

Its latest financial statements showed turnover increased from £60,992,855 in 2018/19 to £65,086,047 for the latest 12 months.

For the same period, pre-tax profit increased from £843,548 to £1,133,528.

A strategic report stated: “The directors believe the company responded positively in challenging market conditions and has made significant advancements during the year. Continuous improvement remains a key focus and driver for the business. New projects and initiatives are being enacted and further progress is expected in the year ahead.”
