PICTURES: The Place in Alness steps up to coronavirus challenge with sessions for children

YOUNG people in Easter Ross benefited from some welcome lockdown relief as coronavirus restrictions started to ease thanks to a series of initiatives by a local youth group.

Workers with The Place Youth Club in Alness had a busy few weeks volunteering during the pandemic and pondering the face of youth work as sanctions were slowly lifted.

Following guidelines and advice from Youth Scotland as the country entered Phase 3, they were ready to deliver for youngsters who had been in lockdown for many weeks. In partnership with other charities, The Place provided fun and activities for youngsters within the community at a time when there has been growing concern for the mental health and wellbeing of many.

This largely focussed on outdoor activities and workshops. The sessions were also used to engage with young people in helping inform and shape the future of youth work in the town.

The group was able to team up with In Your Element, with which it has a long association, to provide some local activities.

Janette Douglas said: "Having used the provider for 19 years outwith the area it felt really special having activities delivered within our own community, especially the tubing in the River Averon. Thanks to Alness Angling Club for their support in these activities."

The Place also worked with Milnafua Community Group to provide a play scheme twice a week for primary age pupils. Workshops included Scottish Exotic Animal Rescue, Drumfun and Tazball laser tag.

Older children took part in mountain biking, river tubing, canoeing and dance with DNA.

The Place also added a couple of play scheme sessions with the support of the Alness Baptist Church.

It thanked funders which include Children In Need, Robertson Trust, Youth Scotland,Youthlink Cashback, MFR Cash for Kids and Awards for All.
