ALNESS High Street is once again in the running for a national award.

It has been shortlisted in the Champion High Street category in this year’s Great British High Street Awards.

Turriff’s High Street and Prestwick’s Main Street are the two other shortlisted Scottish entries.

Alness High Street was named Scottish Champion in the same competition last year, sparking a boost for traders in the Easter Ross town.

Businesses reported increased trade from curious visitors who had read about the award and journeyed to the town to see for themselves.

High Streets Minister Jake Berry MP said: “Congratulations to Alness for being shortlisted for the Champion’s Award for this year’s Great British High Street Awards.

“Alness prides itself on Highland hospitality and community spirit. From the great annual Christmas Shopping Night with its festive volunteers to the first Festival of Running’s success, it isn’t hard to see why.

“People are happier when they can see their hard-earned cash support local businesses. That is why we are celebrating those that go above and beyond to keep their high streets thriving for generations to come.”

Alness High Street is one of 12 high streets shortlisted in the Champion High Street category – three apiece from each of the home nations - which recognises the UK’s best high streets. Additionally, 28 high streets have been shortlisted in the Rising Star category, identifying high streets which are taking the lead to adapt and diversify. All 40 high streets are now in the running to win a prize of up to £15,000 to be dedicated to a local high street initiative.

People can vote for their favourite finalist at www.thegreatbritishhighstreet.co.uk, with the public vote accounting for 20 percent of the final scoring. The shortlisted high streets will then have the chance to impress an expert judging panel as they seek to be crowned Britain’s best.
