Alness Girls in Sport initiative inspires locals to get active with free sportswear boost

Free sportswear is being offered to girls and young women in the Alness area through a new scheme to inspire people to get active.

Set up by High Life Highland’s (HLH) Active Schools volunteer Aileen Stuart, the Girls in Sport initiative offers free, pre-loved active wear through its Facebook page.

Aileen said: “I wanted to set this scheme up because I know the cost of activewear can really put people off exercising.

“Thanks to generous donations, we’ve been able to get a wide range of different clothing, shoes and trainers, available in all different sizes. Our aim with this is to encourage people to stay active by finding a sport they enjoy – or even try a sport they haven’t been able to do before such as trail running, cycling or walking.”

HLH principal sports development manager Mags Duncan said: “We don’t want a lack of kit or the price of activewear to be a barrier to teenagers and young women exercising and being active.

“Aileen is so enthusiastic for the health and wellbeing of others which is very inspiring – with the right kit, we’re hoping that Alness residents will be inspired too in finding a form of exercise they enjoy, setting a lifetime habit of being active.”

HLH’s Active Schools co-ordinators work to increase the opportunities for quality extra-curricular sport and activity within communities for children and young people, inspiring them to adopt healthy lifestyles that will stay with them throughout their lives.

Visitors to the Facebook page can browse a gallery of items and pick what they would like and then message the page to arrange to pick them up.
