THE contract to build the new Alness Academy building has been awarded and construction work has started.
Keir Construction is undertaking the work to create the new school building along with associated sports facilities – including two 3G pitches, a 25m swimming pool, a games hall and a gymnasium, all of which will be managed by High Life Highland and be available for community use outwith school hours.
The £33 million project is due to be completed in the spring of 2020.
Councillor Linda Munro, vice chairwoman of Highland Council’s care, learning and housing committee, said: “The pupils of Alness will greatly benefit from the new facilities and so will the wider community.”
Councillor Fiona Robertson, chairwoman of the Ross and Cromarty committee, added: “It’s great to see this project has commenced and is taking shape.
“Alness Academy is a major priority for Highland Council and this is a welcome milestone for the council, pupils, staff and families of this school, which is at the heart of the local area.”
Elsewhere the council was under continuing pressure to deliver on a new 3-18 campus for
Tain.
While no Scottish Government funding has yet been secured for the project, a stakeholder meeting is planned for December, to be followed by a report to the January meeting of the care and learning committee.
