Thousands of pupils are likely to be impacted when teachers go on strike on January 31.

A letter – dated January 17 (tomorrow) – indicates all schools in the Highlands will be closed as a result of the action.

It follows strikes last week which were carried out by teachers of primary pupils on Tuesday and secondary pupils on Wednesday.

The letter, which carries a Highland Council logo and appears to be signed by top education official Nicky Grant, indicates the strike action by teachers is part of a national dispute regarding pay.

It states: "The safe supervision of children and young people is of the utmost importance and given that we anticipate significantly reduced numbers of both management and teaching staff in schools and early learning and childcare settings, a decision has been made to close all schools to pupils.

"I apologise for the inconvenience this will cause, however it is hoped that by communicating this decision early that it will allow parents/carers to plan ahead."

Highland Council has been asked to confirm the accuracy of the letter.
