The aerospace firm primed to be the principal users of Space Hub Sutherland when it becomes operational has launched its 2022 internship programme.

Forres-based Orbex is offering an opportunity for interns with the right skills to work with it as it prepares to begin commercial launch services.

Orbex is developing a small commercial orbital rocket called Prime which it intends to launch from Space Hub Sutherland, construction work on which has yet to start.

Prime rockets will be launched vertically and carry commercial satellites into space.

Successful applicants will join Orbex at its Forres headquarters and will work across a range of disciplines including guidance, navigation and control (GNC), structures and systems engineering.

The internships are being supported by the Space Placements in Industry (SPIN) programme which is designed to help students studying science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects gain experience to help them develop long-term careers in the space industry.

The programme is managed by the UK Space Agency (UKSA) and supported by Satellite Applications Catapult.

Applications are invited from candidates currently studying at an undergraduate or postgraduate level, with specific experience in mathematics, mechanical engineering, electronics engineering, physics or aerospace.

The paid placements are expected to last 10 months with the potential to join Orbex in a permanent role.

Orbex's head of talent Elliott Doyle said: "The internship programme, now in its fourth year, provides an opportunity for those interested in working within the UK's fast-growing space industry to gain relevant experience across multiple projects and disciplines, working in a highly experienced team.

"Previous interns have been able to transition to full-time roles at Orbex and we are hoping this will continue to be the case with our 2022 cohort."
