WHILE a cake-loving cat's near 60-mile cross-Ross trip from the Black Isle to Wester Ross remains a mystery, his tale does have a happy ending.
Kinlochewe-based Michelle Stevenson has carved out quite a reputation for her cakes – but even she was surprised to find uninvited visitor Casper tucking in to the gluten-free banana loaf she had left cooling overnight next to an open window.
She was even more baffled when a round of telephone calls and emails revealed that the footloose feline had found his way there all the way from Cromarty.
Michelle, who runs Kinlochewe Cakes in her spare time, had made the sweet treat for a Two Lochs Radio ceilidh before brazen Casper helped himself.
She said: "I knew he belonged to someone as he was a beautiful well-nourished cat. I put an email around the village and on local Facebook sites."
It eventually came to the attention of Heather Swinton at Inverness Cat Rescue who was able to establish that the long-haired black and white cat, which had been microchipped. A check of the online database revealed Casper had somehow made his way from Cromarty – setting up a reunion with delighted owner, Alison McMenemy.
Ms Swinton said the owner was "gobsmacked" when told where Casper had turned up.
She said: "She suggested he possibly got into a van – he does get into vehicles – perhaps with someone on holiday going up the west coast. It is a popular place to stop.”
When the story was posted on the cat rescue Facebook page it sparked a huge response.
The group also received a total of £75 in donations.
Mrs Swinton said: "The donations that people did send will go to help another cat in the future.”
