THE Highlands will welcome a major international expedition adventure race for the very first time this summer.

The Open Adventure bi-annual ITERA event is a non-stop five day race which will challenge teams as they tackle a 600km course across the region as part of the Adventure Racing World Series.

Its Highland debut will be the first time it has come to Scotland since 2012.

James Thurlow, director of Open Adventure, said: “We have designed a race format and course that will allow all the teams to finish. The race will be achievable yet challenging to all levels.”

This will be the first year the race has taken place in the Highlands and the course, which will be kept secret until the day, will finish in Inverness.

The endurance event will include trekking across mountains, three kayaking stages, mountain biking as well as some ‘surprise’ challenges.

Entrants must be in teams of four and teams must include men and women.

The competitors will be equipped with individual satellite trackers so that their journeys can be followed online.

This event will be the fifth in a series of expedition races which have taken place across the UK since 2010.

The winning team of the race will receive a place in the world championship in Sri Lanka in December.

ITERA will run from August 10 to 17. Entries close on July 1.
