THE owners of a thriving Wester Ross business on the NC500 have made "the difficult and emotional decision" to sell up and focus on family.

The Midge Bite in Achnasheen has established an enviable reputation amongst locals and visitors alike and was also dropped in on by an unexpected celebrity guest out of the blue back in 2022.

The cafe opened its doors in 2020 with the first lockdown coming just a week after its scheduled opening.

Battling the unprecedented challenges of the pandemic – which was a devastating blow to the Highland hospitality industry in general – it went from strength to strength over the following two years in Achnasheen.

Its owners have now posted: "As many of our regular customers already know, we have had to make the difficult and emotional decision to put The Midge Bite – Achnasheen up for sale.

"Our three young children have been very patient and supportive over the last fantastic four years of a largely Midge Bite dominated life, so it is not with sadness that I look forward to the next chapter because it will be a family focused time. These things take time though so we will be around for a while to come!"

Anyone interested in taking over what they describe as "this thriving business in a truly great locality on the NC500" is invited to get in touch.

Back in 2022, staff were gob-smacked when TV broadcaster Jonathan Ross popped in out of the blue to place an order.

Owner Hazel Boswell at the time called it "completely out of the blue and unexpected".

She said at the time: "Popping in for lunch he chose one of our ever popular deli-style pastrami sandwiches, a home-baked bakewell blondie and an unassuming cup of tea.

"He was very pleasant and chatty, asking how business was and commenting that all our home-baking and lunch menu looked delicious.

"I am very glad he visited my wee cafe and that he was so kind and generous of spirit, posing for a picture with my young, hard-working team and also leaving them a generous tip. These little things mean a lot."

Well-wishers have taken to social media to comment on the latest development.

Alison Carter wrote: "Someone's got some big shoes to fill! You've done an amazing job of building up a smashing business. All the best for the future."

Nikki Morrison said: "Devastated for us but absolutely the right decision for you guys. Wishing you all the best and fingers crossed the new owners can fill the big shoes you will leave behind!"

John Paul-Bell stated: "You've done a sterling job of turning a derelict site into a thriving business. I'm unlikely to forget the magnificent fry up I had in there after a night camping in the Fisherfields. Best of luck, you've totally earned it."

Fiona Dodds posted: "You are going to missed by many of us but you have to do what's best for you and the family. Hopefully someone will snap it up and continue to be the wonderful place that it is."
