A SANDY shoreline set in the spectacular landscape of Coigach in Wester Ross is now pristine after six hardy volunteers cleared it off 23 bags of rubbish.

Badentarbet in Achiltibuie is the third beach clean that the team from the Scottish Hydro Electric Transmission has tackled at different locations through their Be the Difference days.

The group, who work nearby in SHE Transmission’s environment and land teams, collected 23 bags of rubbish from the beach and took time to complete a Maritime Conservation Society beach clean report.

The team has since been thanked for their efforts by the Coigach Community Council.

SHE Transmission’s environmental advisor Peter Watson helped organise the clean-up.

He said: “All of the team either live or work in the surrounding area and it’s important to us to give something back to the community, so we used our company volunteering day to comb through the flotsam and jetsam on the shore and remove any of the items that hadn’t appeared there naturally.

“It’s amazing just how much rubbish can be washed up by the tide, but sadly some of it is there through people littering. This area is known for its stunning scenery and beautiful beaches so we wanted to make sure the shore was looking its best.”

Ann Macleod from the Coigach Community Council added: “We would usually have our own beach clean in early May but other events meant we had to temporarily focus our attention elsewhere so we were delighted when we saw the team in their high vis outfits on the beach.

“We had no idea they were coming so it was a lovely surprise and they’re welcome back anytime. We’ll even provide them with helping hands, tea and cakes next time.”
