An Achiltibuie proposal for a monument to commemorate the rebels of Coigach who fought against land struggles has been given the green light.

Coigach Heritage has been fundraising for some time to set the new project, titled Lorg na Còigich, into motion.

Coigach Heritage said: “Lorg na Còigich will be a magnificent sculpture to commemorate the land struggles in Coigach, particularly in the 1850s when local women led the resistance that prevented evictions.

“While Lorg na Còigich follows the footprints of those who have gone before us, it is also about the importance of community and the traces we will leave to future generations.”

As well as the main sculpture, the new project will also feature pathways and seats, walls and an entrance, the ‘Three Women Stones’ honouring the women who led the resistance. Also featured will be the Five Boats and more.

The designs were created by Marian Level and Will Maclean.

With a diameter of nine metres and a height of four metres, the central stone sculpture will be large. There will also be a wall around the sculpture, with five polished granite slabs to represent each of the five boats that failed in their attempts to serve eviction summons.

Lorg na Còigich will be located at Cnoc Na Bhothain, which sits above the minor road between Achiltibuie and Achduart. According to Coigach Heritage, this will create a viewpoint with panoramic views to the south across Lochbroom and over the Ben Mòr Coigach mountain range.
