INCREASING exam success at a Ross-shire school has sparked praise from a head teacher for her senior pupils.

Alness Academy's acting headteacher, Catherine Brown was speaking after the number of pupils achieving five or more awards at National 5 level increased by six per cent year-on-year.

The number of students earning at least three Highers also rose, this time by four per cent, while in S5 the school doubled the number of A grade Higher passes than in 2019.

She said: "I would like to congratulate all of our senior pupils on the fantastic set of exam results that they achieved this session.

"What is particularly pleasing about this year’s rise in attainment is that it continues to follow the trend of recent years.

"This is down to the hard work of all our pupils and recognition of the changes the school has made to diversify the curriculum to ensure that there is the opportunity for all of our learners to succeed."

She added: "Our departments have performed extremely well over the past year and I would like to thank the tremendous staff team that have shown commitment and professionalism at Alness Academy.

"There have been significant improvements in Maths, English, History, Chemistry, Biology, Physics and PE. Higher Business Management had 14 grade A passes as Mr Corbett has managed to take the department from strength to strength in a very short space of time and we welcome him to the school on a permanent basis.

And the headteacher hopes to build on these successes going forward.

"My vision for the future of Alness Academy is to continue to build on the progress that we have made:

  • Raise attainment through excellent learning and teaching
  • Improve literacy and numeracy for S1 to S3
  • Develop our young workforce through work based experience
  • Further build and strengthen leadership across the school
  • Provide professional development opportunities for staff
  • Focus on health and wellbeing for all
  • Continue to develop the Sports Academy
  • Communicate success through a new school website www.alnessacademy.co.uk

"We have much to look forward to in 2020-21 and we will move into the new school just after the October break. The

staff and pupils will be shown round in September to begin the next phase of the journey to excellence of Alness

Academy.

"I look forward to welcoming the parents and wider community for events when it is safe to do so.

Finally, we would like to thank the staff, pupils and parents/carers for all of their hard work and support over the

past year and the last few months in particular."

Meanwhile, the school and Highland Council have reminded pupils that the SQA Appeals service is now open.

Schools and colleges have the information they need to question any eligible #SQAResults.

More information, including key dates, and an overview of outcomes, is on the SQA website at this link.
