Motorists using the A9 have been warned of hazardous surface flooding on the busy trunk road in Inverness.

Traffic Scotland issued the advice in the early hours amid heavy, persistent rain and an active yellow weather warning from the Met Office.

Confirming the surface flooding, a Traffic Scotland spokesperson said: "The A9 south of Raigmore Interchange is restricted due to flooding on or near the carriageway. Road users are advised to use caution on approach and allow extra time for their journey."

The A9 between the Longman roundabout and Raigmore Interchange is also notorious for flooding, with roadside drains regularly blocked - causing water to pool across one or even both lanes of the southbound carriageway.

Meanwhile motorists across the Highlands have been advised to take extra care on the region's roads amid the active Met Office warning. Forecasters are predicting up to 170mm of rain could fall in some places before the alert ends at 9pm on Monday.

This is likely to lead to surface flooding in many locations, and has also sparked warnings from ScotRail that services on several Highland lines could be revised or cancelled at short notice.
