A much-loved local woman has celebrated her 100th birthday with a special visit from her first great grandson.

Centenarian Margaret Ross commemorated her milestone birthday with friends and family, and her day was made extra special as she got to meet her first great grandson for the first time, three-week-old Heath Ahmad.

Now living in Culduthel Care Home, part of the Meallmore group, Margaret Ross, née Sibbald, turned 100 on November 10.

She was born in 1921 in Edinburgh and spent her early years living in the Dalry district of the city.

Margaret moved to the Black Isle with her mother and two sisters following the death of her father in 1928 and left school at 14 to work as a bookkeeper for a small family firm in Inverness – when she was 16 she began a career with The Inland Revenue in London.

At the outbreak of the Second World War her department was evacuated to Harrogate in Yorkshire where she remained until the war was over. At this point Margaret moved to Hilton in Inverness where she has now lived for more than 60 years.

In June 1950, Margaret married Ian Ross at Queen Street Church, Inverness. Together they had three children, Ian, Norman and Christine. During this time, Margaret was a housewife and an active member of the church and the wider community.

Denise Scott, care home manager of Culduthel Care Home, said: “It was a privilege to celebrate such a milestone birthday with Margaret. Our residents and staff had a wonderful time and it was great to see the joy on her face when she got to meet her great grandson, Heath, for the first time.

"As well as Heath, Margaret’s children, six grandchildren and their partners, and her nieces and nephews joined her for her special day which shows just how loved she is. It was a really special day and we were honoured to be part of it.

“Margaret continues to live a very full life and her positive outlook and can-do attitude stands her in good stead. She also tells me that the occasional Piña colada has helped her through her 100 years.”

Norman Ross, Margaret’s son, said: “My mum had a lovely get together for her 100th birthday which was made perfect by the staff at Culduthel who went ‘above and beyond’ to ensure her day with her family went without a hitch.

"Since living at Culduthel, my mum has been very happy and has been well looked after by everyone. She has made nice friendships with staff and residents alike.

“My mum received lots of cards but there was one card in particular – from the Queen – that meant so much to her. As they both have lived through incredible times and seen the world change so much during their lifetimes, it was brilliant to reflect on this on her special day.”
