SURGING demand has sparked the announcement of a new multi-million pound port expansion in the Cromarty Firth – and the creation of 140 jobs.

The Port of Cromarty Firth is to spend £30 million on a quayside expansion.

It comes just two years after an earlier expansion was completed – but a record-breaking boom in cruise ship visits, and recent successes in securing work in the offshore wind sector, have resulted in the need for even more space.

The new 218m quayside and nine acres of laydown area will serve as a new energy and cruise hub and should be compete by 2020.

It will not only be able to accommodate large scale renewable, decommissioning and oil and gas projects, it will also be able to berth the largest cruise ships currently being designed and built.

Port chief executive Bob Buskie said: “We believe this investment will help bring new work to the area for decades to come.”

He added that there was “substantial demand” for the services in the port and that, despite the 150m quayside and laydown area that was finished in 2016, it had been experiencing capacity issues.

News of another quayside expansion follows recent success in securing a £10 million contract from Moray East Offshore Windfarm for work on its 95-turbine development.
