Ross County manager Tony Docherty says win over Raith Rovers gave payers ‘obvious lift’ – but insists Staggies will remain grounded ahead of crunch Championship fixtures

Ross County manager Tony Docherty wants his players to soak in that winning feeling – in the hope it will inspire them to more victories in the coming weeks.

The Staggies secured their first league victory in seven months against Raith Rovers, winning 2-0 thanks to goals from debutant Miller Thomson and top scorer Ronan Hale.

Having waited so long for a win, there were understandably joyous scenes from County’s players and supporters at the final whistle, and Docherty believed he could see an immediate impact on his squad afterwards.

Tonight and tomorrow, he says, will be about enjoying the fruits of their hard work, before trying to build on the momentum that will hopefully have been kickstarted this weekend.

“I just said to the players as soon as I went in that it was so obvious they had been lifted,” Docherty said.

“I’m encouraging them to celebrate, because they’ve been through a hard time.

“It feels like a bigger win than just three points at home, and I want the boys to enjoy it because they have worked hard to merit that win.

“It’s about being grounded now. We’ve got our first win, and we have to build on that.

“Results went our way today, so we’ll enjoy that, but we’ll get straight back to work next week to prepare for St Johnstone.

“Special mention to the supporters – there’s nothing better than players celebrating with the fans at the end of the match.

“They played a huge part in that win, getting right behind the team when it was nervy.

“I could hear them all game, and the fans are so important so hopefully we can all grow together after that win today.”

On an individual note, there were some important moments defensively to back up the goals County scored

Trevor Carson made a couple of big saves on his way to a first clean sheet since moving to the Highlands, while club captain Declan Gallagher and goalscorer Thomson each made clearances off the line.

“That reinforces my message to the players that if they keep putting in the work things will turn for them,” Docherty continued.

“Declan Gallagher for example has been pilarried for his role in two defeats, but his goal-line clearance was heroic.

“Miller clears one off the line as well, so it was just rewards for the players’ efforts and hopefully it will reinforce the message that will allow us to go forward.

“Obviously with Trevor, getting the clean sheet, we feel so secure with him.

“Scott showed creativity in midfield, and the two young boys showed a real energy and enthusiasm.

“It’s pleasing to see them doing so well, so it’s important to celebrate that but we have to be grounded.”

In attack, Hale had cut a frustrated figure before his stoppage time finish, but Docherty thinks that the Northern Ireland international staying calm and trusting the process will get the best out of him.

“I get frustrated with Ronan getting frustrated,” County’s manager added.

“My message to him is to be a bit calmer and believe in himself. If we keep doing the right things, it’s consistency, and if he keeps doing the right things he will get his reward. He did today, so hopefully that will kick him on.

“He is a really driven individual, and he’s brilliant to work with, but I don’t want him to be frustrated.

“I want him to be confident and back himself, and with his ability and standard of finishing, it’s brilliant.

“Jordan played a part as well, and I need substitutes to come on and contribute. You can start or end the game, but as long as you’re part of a winning team, that’s what matters.”
