ALNESS United will play their first game in the town for years when they take on Scourie at Dalmore Park in North Caledonian League Division Two tomorrow.

Alness United won their first game 9-0 against Bonar Bridge.
Alness United won their first game 9-0 against Bonar Bridge.

The club, who were in abeyance last season, were forced to play all of their matches at the Highland Football Academy in Dingwall during the 2018/19 campaign due to no pitches available in Alness.

But United are delighted to be able to return home to mark their comeback into the NCL.

Manager Robert MacCormack is determined to mark their homecoming in style.

“We are looking forward to bringing football back to Alness,” he said.

“The last time that Alness had a team in the division they were playing all of their home matches in Dingwall. It is brilliant that the club can play in Alness again.”

Alness United started their Division Two campaign in ruthless fashion as they hammered Bonar Bridge 9-0 in Dornoch.

Jude Fraser scored a hat-trick in the second half with Gordon Finlayson scoring twice in the first half.

Mikey Rae, Mark Lamont, Blair Morrison and Ryan McFee also found the net.

MacCormack didn’t dare dream they would get off to flying start.

“It was not only brilliant to score as many goals as we did, but to keep a clean sheet as well,” he said.

“We didn’t expect that kind of scoreline at all.

“We started off really well and were 3-0 up within 10 minutes.

“When the other team is 3–0 down, the opposition’s heads tend to go down.

“But we just kept going, even when it was 5-0 at half-time and we made substitutions we just kept going.

“To be honest we could have scored more, but we were delighted with how we played.”

MacCormack says he has a full squad of 23 players free from injury to choose from which is giving him a good headache.

“We have a lot of young boys in our squad and we will look to give them as much football as we can this season,” he said.
