Ross County teenager Dylan Smith called into Scotland under-21 squad for friendlies against Ireland and Iceland

Dylan Smith has been called up to the Scotland under-21 squad as the Ross County defender takes the next step in his development.

The 18-year-old has been included in Scot Gemmill’s squad for the first time having previously turned out for the under-17 and under-19 sides.

Scotland are due to take on the Republic of Ireland and Iceland in friendly matches later this month.

For Smith, it will be a new challenge after he captained the under-19s over the last 18 months.

He spent time out on loan at Arbroath in League One earlier this season to get regular minutes after a long-term injury took him out of contention at Ross County, but was recalled to Dingwall in January and has since made two appearances for the Staggies’ first team.

That means that in total, the former Culloden Academy pupil has made 37 senior appearances, scoring one goal.

Smith’s call-up follows news that teammate Ronan Hale will be in line to make his debut for Northern Ireland after switching allegiances from the Republic of Ireland.
