After a frustrating 12 months in Dingwall after joining the Staggies, Henderson has flourished in the Championship so far this season – scoring nine times in 23 appearances across all competitions.

He also has four league assists for the Honest Men, putting him joint-third in the second-tier’s rankings.

Although initially announced as a season-long loan, there was a recall clause that could have seen Henderson return to the Highlands next month.

However, it has now been confirmed that the Staggies will not take up that option, allowing the 22-year-old to continue playing regular football for the rest of the campaign.

County manager Don Cowie commented: “We are really pleased with the levels of performance Jay has had this season.

“Jay and I had a good conversation and both agreed he is at an important stage of his development, and playing regular football has been vital for him.

“We believe that continuing his loan at Ayr will maintain that.”
