ST Duthus struck silver for the first time this season when they defeated Golspie Sutherland 3–2 in the Football Times Cup final at Brora’s Dudgeon Park.

Man-of-the-match Ben Bruce was the two-goal hero for the Tain Saints who came from behind after a slow start to run out deserved winners.

“We weren’t at our best in the first half, but the wind played a big part,” admitted Saints’ co-manager Andrew Ross.

“Their opening goal was a screamer, it was a goal fit for any cup final.

“After the disappointment of losing to Golspie last week we could tell from the attitude of the players at half time there was no way we were going to lose the match.

“Although the wind dropped they blew Golspie away for the first 20 minutes of the second half.”

Ross praised Bruce for his contribution and gave a special mention to his back four.

“Our defence were fantastic today,” he said.

“I think anyone of them could have got man-of-the-match.”

Golspie’s Craig Ross broke the deadlock in the first half.

He popped up on the stroke of half time with a stunning 30-yard drive to put Golspie ahead in the final minute of a scrappy first half.

But Saints looked a different side after the break.

And they got their reward when Bruce equalised in the 50th minute when he shrugged off a defender to slot the ball past Golspie keeper Graeme Williamson.

Bruce edged Saints in front seven minutes later when he found the back of the net again after playing a slick one-two with Stefan McRitchie.

There was only one team in it at this stage and Liam Rostock came off the bench to make it 3–1 when he caught Williamson off his line with a neat lob.

Golspie staged a late rally and Adam Sutherland pulled one back following a corner kick but Saints held on to lift the trophy.

In the league, Halkirk United and Thurso drew 1–1 at Morrison Park, while Inverness Athletic defeated Bonar Bridge 4–2 at Dornoch.

Invergordon, who have been idle for the past couple of weeks, are back in action on Saturday with an away trip to Orkney.
