The talented school team which featured school pupils from Inverness, Ross-shire and across the Highlands proved too good for the Fifers at Station Park in Nairn on Tuesday.

Seven pupils from Dingwall Academy were in the North of Scotland team along with pupils from Culloden, Millburn and Inverness Royal Academy along with Fort William, Kingussie, Orkney, Stornoway and Thurso.

Goalscorers for the North of Scotland included Euan Kennedy from Thurso, Joe Coyle from Kingussie, Kieran Munro and Craig Lawrie from Dingwall Academy, Robbie Mackenzie from the Nicolson Institute and Gavin Thomson from the Inverness Royal Academy.

The North of Scotland will now face either Dundee or Paisley in the final which will take place mid March at a neutral venue to be confirmed.

The boys will be looking to become the first North of Scotland team to win the National Trophy final in 47 years as the region has not won it since 1978.

Head coach Kevin McKie, who is also a physical education teacher at Dingwall Academy said it was a tremendous achievement by the entire squad to reach the final.

He also said the fact that schools from across the Highlands and Islands region are represented is testament to the level of talent which exists in the north.

“It was a great result and it was a tough game, but we managed to get the goals in the end.

“We are buzzing to get to the final and it is a massive for the North of Scotland. After Covid, we barely had enough people to run the team and we had to take a couple of years out.

“Last year was our first year back in the competition and we managed to get to the quarter finals.

“This year, we have a fantastic group of players. It has been a long time since we last won it in 1978 which shows you how big an achievement this is.”

The team are looking for sponsorship and support financially however big or small to help with possible new strips, buses/travel, football kit and food costs so if anyone is interested or would like further information please contact North of Scotland Secretary Ben Bruce on Ben.Bruce@highlifehighland.com or Under 18s Coach Kevin McKie at Dingwall Academy kevin.mckie2@highland.gov.uk
