Royal Dornoch shock Tain in Connon trophy

After breaking a 15-year domination by the women golfers of Tain Golf Club at Bonar Bridge two years ago, Royal Dornoch unexpectedly won back the G A Connon Trophy at Tain in the Inter Club women’s team competition for the clubs of Ross-shire and Sutherland that has been ongoing every year since 1953.

During the 65-year history of the competition, Tain have won the trophy 41 times and with home advantage were expected to win again last Saturday.

But missing their regular third low-handicap player, Claire Bannerman, who was attending a family wedding, sisters Anne Ryan and Mary Smith were unable to carry Fiona Brand and Mairi Orr to a retention of the Salver and on this occasion had to settle for second place behind a strong quartet from Royal Dornoch.
