CHIEF executive officer Steven Ferguson says Ross County will look to continue strengthening its support of its women’s team.

His comments come after the women’s senior team played at the Global Energy Stadium for the first time when they took on Bonnyrigg Rose Athletic in the Scottish Cup second round on Sunday.

Ross County launched its senior team in June last year building on its youth set -up and this season entered the Highlands and Islands League as well as SWFL North.

Ferguson says having the Scottish Cup clash at the Global Energy Stadium was another step forward for the club as they look to strengthen their women’s team.

He said: “The amount of people who came out to support the team just shows you the appetite for the women’s game.

“It was great to have the women’s team on the pitch and obviously showcase the hard work they have put in over the years.

“To get a good crowd in a Scottish Cup tie on the main pitch is a spectacle and a real marker from the club’s point of view for the support from us to them.

“Credit goes to Iain MacIver and his staff who put in the hard miles over the last five years and now we are reaping the benefits. It needed to get to this stage and move to the next level.

“What we are putting in allows us to implement raising the bar and gives women the chance to be serious about their football.

“We need to build and add layers, I spoke about six months ago the women’s game is part of our strategy and we need to reach the moments that will allow it to grow.

“There is a realism that we can’t run before we can walk and there is a lot of steps to take where we want to go.

“We can only take one step at a time and this is another step forward.”

Ross County men’s team manager Don Cowie gave his support to the women’s team on Sunday too.

He said: “It is a massive stepping stone for the women’s team to play on the pitch. It is a great occasion for them.

“It is about creating that connection and community feel that everyone together as a club that is our ethos. To have it under the same umbrella is an important part of our football club.

“You can see how many people turned out how important it is for everyone.”
