The Staggies legend was appointed development coach at Fir Park in October 2022, stepping up to the first team job initially on an interim basis the following February.

A strong run of form to end that season saw the Steelmen finish seventh in the Premiership.

In Kettlewell’s only full season in charge, Motherwell finished ninth.

Strong early-campaign form saw them rise into the top half, but a run of one win in their last nine matches - culminating in back-to-back defeats to bottom of the table St Johnstone in the Scottish Cup and Premiership - saw fans voicing their discontent over the team’s performances.

That has prompted Kettlewell to say enough is enough and tender his resignation.

A statement released by the club said: “Motherwell Football Club can confirm the club board of directors have very reluctantly accepted the resignation of Stuart Kettlewell today.

“Stuart approached chief executive Brian Caldwell on Monday morning to explain why he wished to resign.

“Stuart explained that some of the personal abuse was now affecting his family, to the point where they didn’t wish to attend games.

“As a result, he felt it would be best if he tendered his resignation.”

Ross County are next due to face Motherwell at Fir Park on Saturday, February 15.
