Ross County defender George Harmon in a protective boot after being forced off against Dundee in Dingwall last Saturday

Ross County are still to determine the extent of wing back George Harmon’s injury sustained against Dundee, manager Don Cowie has revealed.

The left-sided defender was forced off early on in the Staggies’ 2-0 win last Saturday, and could be seen congratulating his teammates at full time while on crutches.

He went to hospital afterwards to get his ankle assessed, but County are not yet in a position to put a timescale on his return.

With fellow wing back Josh Reid already missing from the matchday squad after picking up a knock in training, Cowie praised the versatility of Eli Campbell – making his first start since signing on loan from Everton – moving into a less familiar role wide in the backline.

“George is in a boot right now,” Cowie explained.

“He got a bit of a nasty one, after a really awkward landing on Saturday.

“We don’t think it’s anything too major, but at the same time we need to make sure the swelling goes down.

“It’s too soon (to say how long Harmon will be out). He’s in the boot for four or five days, and then we will see how he is after that.

“He has had an x-ray and there is no bone break or anything like that, but there could be soft tissue damage, and ligaments.

“Josh Reid is still out, after being out at the weekend, so that’s two natural left wing-backs.

“I thought Eli Campbell did extremely well in challenging circumstances, moving into a different area of the pitch.

“That’s why we have a really competitive squad, so we are prepared for those sorts of things that can happen in the blink of an eye.”

Will Nightingale and Ricki Lamie have also been missing from County’s defence through injury, but when everyone is fit Cowie is delighted with the strength in depth he will have at his disposal.

“We all understand we have to improve defensively on what we did last season,” he reasoned.

“It was about recruiting to give us that real competitiveness within the squad to make sure that we have a solid foundation in this league.

“I believe now that we’ve got two really good options in each position, and that can be a really positive thing for us in terms of each player pushing each other to stay in the team and have that shirt.

“I’m delighted with how it’s gone the last couple of games defensively.”
