Glasgow sees Ross County Athletics Club celebrates success at Inter District Championships and British Cross Challenge





ROSS County Athletics Club athletes achieved major success competing at the Inter District Cross Country and British Cross Challenge in Glasgow.

Billy Sutherland claimed victory in the Scottish Under-15 Boys Race with Andrew Baird claiming the British Cross Challenge and Scottish Inter District titles at Under-17 level.

Sutherland, from Latheronwheel in Caithness, claimed gold in his race when he finished ahead of 63 athletes in a time of 12 minutes and 30 seconds.

The Wick High School pupil followed on his success from winning the River Ness 5k at the Loch Ness Marathon festival of running in September.

As a result of his victory, Sutherland has gained his first Scottish National vest and will compete in Leeds in February at the Celtic Cup International.

In February, he will also compete for the first time in the Scottish Cross Country Championships in Falkirk, and is aiming to build on his recent achievements.

Baird, from Easter Kinkell, claimed gold in the Under- 17 race in 18:04 in a field of 72 as he was crowned British Cross Challenge and Scottish Inter-district champion.

The Fortrose Academy pupil has achieved success at Scottish and international level including becoming Scottish Short Course Country champion in November.

Recognised as one of the most promising prospects in Scottish athletics, Baird is part of the Scottish Athletics Academy based at the Scottish Institute of Sport in Stirling.

The two-year education programme for talented track and field athletes aims to develop knowledge, skills, and competencies to help them progress towards senior competition.
