Ross County midfielder Paton aiming for Olympic spot as Canada attempt to qualify

Harry Paton is contemplating an Olympic dream as Canada show interest in his Premiership performances.

The Ross County midfielder has already been capped for his country at under-17 and 21 levels, with the latest opportunity beckoning at under-23 level.

Canada’s male footballers haven’t qualified for the Olympics since 1984, but will learn their CONCACAF qualifying group opponents in the draw next month.

With Mexico and Honduras the top seeds in each group, Canada’s three matches will be played in Guadalajara between March 20 and 27. The two top nations in each group will then progress to semi finals, where the two winners will seal a place at the Tokyo 2020 games.

All this is way down the line for midfielder Paton, who is yet to learn if he will be in his country’s 23-man squad. But having impressed of late against Celtic and Hibs, the 21-year-old certainly has a fighting chance.

Paton said: “I’ve heard a few things about the upcoming Olympics, but nothing is fully confirmed."
