It is a repeat of his result in Glasgow last year, where he was runner up behind Germany’s Matthias Schindler.

Graham finished in a time of 23:32.12, which was 2.11 seconds behind Frenchman Florian Bouziani.

He had closed the gap after Bouziani got off to a flying start through the first section, a checkpoint at which Graham was 7.58 seconds off the pace and even behind Canadian rider Alexandre Hayward.

Hayward did hold on to a podium spot, finishing third in a further 4.75 seconds behind Graham.

The Highlander improved significantly on his positioning in the Paralympic Games, where he finished sixth.

Paralympic time trial champion Thomas Peyroton-Dartet finished seventh at the World Championships, which are being held in Zurich, Switzerland.

Graham will next be in action in the road race on Thursday, which is due to start at 11.15am UK-time.
