Johnston named new Ross Sutherland skipper
Ross Sutherland head coach John Mann hopes that the club’s new captain can bring a whole new perspective to the Stags next season.
Ali Kennedy stepped down as skipper feeling like he could not commit the same amount of time for next season, and he has been replaced by Jamie “JJ” Johnston.
Johnston spent last season as vice-captain, and was the side’s top try scorer with 14 in the Caledonia North Two.
So Mann says there was only one obvious candidate to take over when Kennedy relinquished the role.
“Straight away, when we knew Ali was stepping down – and he did a hell of a good job for the team – I think JJ was probably the next one in line,” Mann said.
“He was vice-captain last year. Once we knew that Ali was stepping down, I think it was just that natural progression.
“He was the one that the boys turned to straight away and thought, he’s our new man.”
