ROSS Callachan is confident the goals will flow for Ross County as manager Malky Mackay imprints his style and vision on the squad.

The Staggies’ summer signing ended last season as top scorer at relegated Hamilton Accies with nine goals from midfield.

There were few opportunities to grasp his first for County in Saturday’s stalemate with last season’s double cup winners St Johnstone, but Callachan viewed the outcome as a positive step for a team still in transition.

Mackay is still seeking as many as seven new faces, while he remains in the early stages of implementing his ideas on the training ground.

Callachan has been highly impressed with what he has seen so far.

He said: “You can tell the gaffer is a top manager who has managed in the Premier League in England.

“It is just how he speaks to us as players, the training, and the way he coaches. It is first class and I’m just trying to take it all in, soak it all up and learn.

“I want to get better and everyone in the team knows they can definitely get better.

“We’ve still got signings to come in and we missed about two weeks with the whole squad basically contracting Covid-19.

“Credit to St Johnstone as well, they’re a good team, but I think the goals will come for us.

The two teams cancelled each other out.

“We started with similar systems, but they changed it a few times to be fair, which was a credit to us. It was a good point to build on.”

Last season, County lost too many goals – 66 in the league.

Callachan felt the solid start, aided by a missed penalty from Saints’ Ali McCann, was testament to hard work and organisation.

He said: “The responsibility for clean sheets is on every one of us.

“We defend from the front, starting with the strikers. The gaffer has been drilling that into us.

“But I thought we were absolutely solid on Saturday.”
