Fortrose and Rosemarkie Union may not be able to get their hands on the Inverness District Football Association Second Division trophy this season, but they might have just played a crucial role in deciding who does.

They were able to hold former league leaders Highland Hospice to a 1–1 draw, allowing Clachnacuddin’s Under-20s to move top of the table with a 9–0 thrashing of Ness Thistle.

Stuart Gammie opened the scoring for FR Union before Duncan Morris equalised for Hospice.

For Clach, meanwhile, Sean Reid-Nicol scored a hat trick, Thomas Lewis and Aarron Grant each claimed braces with Declan Bray and Ryan Walker also getting on the scoresheet.

The young Lilywhites, who have strung together an impressive winning streak, now lead the way in IDFA’s third tier by a single point with three games left to play on the calendar.

However, they have a vastly superior goal difference to Hospice – more than double – which is something that could prove decisive when the final standings come in later this month.

Elsewhere, Tomatin United defeated Ferrybache 4–2, Highland Athletic won 6–2 against Ness City and G16 United are mathematically cut adrift at the bottom after losing 8–0 to Gellions.

The other two divisions can boast similarly tight title races after results from earlier in the week.

Two points separate the top four sides in the Premier Division, with leaders Maryburgh and Avoch inactive this week but Loch Ness and Black Rock Rovers picking up big wins – 5–1 over Ardersier and 6–0 against IRN Security respectively.

Culloden Blacksmiths picked up their first league win of the season, beating Tomatin 5–1.

In the First Division it is down to goal difference at this late stage of the season between NMM Sam’s and Black Isle United.

Those two faced off this week, with United triumphing 3–1 to put the title race on a knife edge.

Inverness enjoyed themselves against Balloan, meanwhile, winning 8–3, and Drakies inflicted more misery on bottom of the table Hill Rovers, beating them 4–1.
