A TEAM of junior golfers from Ross-shire have won the Junior Scottish Open which was held at Fortrose and Rosemarkie Golf Club last Wednesday.

The winning team from Muir of Ord was led by Duncan Bethune with juniors Robbie Macrae, and brothers Sam and Ben Cowie. Ben, the joker in the pack, summed up their experience.

He said: “I’ve got a bit of a sore back carrying the team around the course, a few mistakes from the boys. But other than that, it was a good day considering we spent no money. We got food, and we were well looked after.”

Twelve teams of three juniors with one adult playing and guiding them around the course took part in the mixed format designed to give the youngsters a different experience of competitive golf.

Aboyne Golf Club’s teams came second and fourth with one of the Fortrose and Rosemarkie teams splitting them in third place. Ben Patience from the host club was nearest the pin for the boys.

Scottish Golf’s club development manager, Jackie Davidson, explained how the Junior Scottish Open came about: She said: “This was to give young people the opportunity to embrace competition and at the same time, not get too serious about it. It was fabulous. We tested the new format which seemed to work and the kids had fun and the team leaders were just superb.

She added: “Using The Ryder Cup legacy, we were able to split teams into USA and Europe which will get everyone interested again ahead of this year’s Ryder Cup.
