Golden games for United's Mackenzie

By Andrew Henderson

Highland United footballer Joe Mackenzie came away from the World Games in Abu Dhabi with a gold medal.

Mackenzie, from Alness, was representing the Great Britain team that went on to top the group ahead of Australia, Germany and Switzerland.

Team GB defeated Switzerland 4-0, drew 0-0 with Germany and got a 1-0 win against Australia in their group games.

That put them in the gold medal play-off against the Aussies, where the Brits won 3-1 – with Mackenzie scoring one of the goals.

The 24-year-old was also named captain of the squad for the tournament, and he says he was surprised by the honour and the success the team had.

“You get to go out there and it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience, it was incredible,” Mackenzie said.
