A Shaun Kerr goal was all that separated the teams as Invergordon came out on top in a battling 1–0 victory against Ross rivals St Duthus at the Recreation Grounds.

It was St Duthus’ first league defeat since the opening day of the season, and sees Invergordon edge above them into top on goal-difference.

Saints’ co-manager Stuart Ross bemoaned missed opportunities, saying: “We had chances at the start of each half and there was a penalty miss as well.

“Against a team like Invergordon we can’t afford to miss them.

“They were big moments in the game. It wasn’t all us by any means but I felt it was one of those games, the first team to score was going on to win it.”

The derby got off to an explosive start. Liam Rostock flashed a shot just wide of Invergordon keeper Grant Beattie’s left hand post in the first minute.

At the other end Jordan Knight fired against the crossbar.

Saints had the chance to take the lead in the 16th minute when were awarded a penalty after Jon Campbell was tripped.

However, Ben Bruce’s spot kick failed to test Beattie as it flew wide of target.

Darran Goller came close with a shot which was unlucky to clip the outside of the woodwork.

Knight then forced a good save from Saints’ keeper Danny McCarthy as Invergordon finished the half strongly.

Invergordon were dominant in the second period and deservedly went ahead in the 67th minute – Kerr the first to react after a Knight effort was saved by McCarthy.

It initially looked as if the goal would be ruled out for off-side but after consulting with her near-side assistant referee, Molly Alexander allowed it to stand.

Saints were reduced to 10 men a minute later when Craig Ross picked up a second yellow card.

Invergordon had the chance to add to their lead in the 88th minute when a hand ball was spotted in the box but Arron Christie’s spot kick was brilliantly saved by the Saints’ keeper.

Invergordon coach Alan Duff said: “It was good to finally get a win over them. I think over the piece we deserved it.”
