Johnston named Ross Sutherland player of the year

Not only has Jamie Johnston taken over the Ross Sutherland captaincy for next season, he has also been named the club’s 2018/19 player of the season.

The Stags held their annual awards dinner last Friday night, with Johnston walking away with the top prize.

Head coach John Mann believes Johnston was the natural choice due to his impressive scoring record last season.

“When your second row or number eight is your top try scorer, you’re doing something right,” Mann insisted.

“It’s everything he brings to the team, enthusiasm on the pitch and just as much off it as well.

“It’s that leadership he’s got, especially in his second year at the club.

“Obviously we’ve made him captain this year moving forward, but he also does a job on the pitch which is more important.”
