Paralympic hopeful Fin Graham wants to see a celebration of sport whenever the Tokyo Olympics finally go ahead.

The International Olympic Committee and the Japanese government announced earlier this week that the 2020 games would be delayed until next year due to the effects of the coronavirus pandemic.

A specific window for the event to take place was not declared, with some suggestions that it could take place in spring instead of summer to help squeeze it into a packed sporting calendar.

That is not something that Strathpeffer paracyclist Graham is thinking about though, as he is just hoping to see an appreciation of sport whenever it goes ahead.

“Whenever the games are, we’re going to have to be able to get to them,” he said.

“You hope that when the games happen, everyone will be able to come together for them and it will be a celebration of everything that is going on. Hopefully people won’t be taking it for granted.

“It was unfortunately the expected decision.

“At this point in time the focus is just trying to get rid of coronavirus, and when it’s gone we can then all enjoy the games.”

Graham still has to make sure of his spot in Tokyo, and he is not alone – there is the issue of qualifying events to fit in before the Olympics themselves.

For now, all he can do is train and stay ready to race.

“The positions weren’t guaranteed – I was never sure whether I was going to the Games or not,” Graham added.

“Nobody really knows what the timeline of this is going to be.

“It’s just about trying to keep fit and on top of everything so that when racing starts again, you’re in the best position possible to compete.”
