A late winner from Golspie Sutherland substitute Eoghann Davie dented St Duthus’ North Caledonian League title hopes in a five-goal thriller at King George V Park.

With the match evenly balanced at two goals apiece, Davie struck a superb winner to give Golspie their first win against Saints in over two years.

The defeat leaves Saints in second place but within reach of the three clubs immediately behind them in the table.

Saints got off to the worst possible start when Ally MacLeod gave the hosts the lead in the second minute. A long throw-in from Blair Duncan was knocked on by Liam Bremner and MacLeod applied the final touch.

Saints were back on level terms in the 18th minute when Ben Bruce scored with an angled drive in the 18th minute and the club’s top marksman made no mistake after 41 minutes with a low drive into the far corner of the net.

The visitors went ahead four minutes from the break when Bruce scored from the penalty spot after being taken down in the box.

But Golspie had the final say in the half.

Bremner headed home a Craig Ross corner on the stroke of half time to make it all to play for.

The game was in the balance until Davie’s late intervention, which made it 3-2.

Saints will not have to wait long to try and exact their revenge on Golspie. The two sides meet again in the Football Times Cup final at Brora’s Dudgeon Park on Saturday.

“If last Saturday’s match is anything to go by, the cup final should be another cracking game,” said Saints’ manager Stuart Ross.

The final was originally scheduled to be played at Clach’s Grant Street Park, but because of fire damage it was switched to Brora.

Ross added: “It is a great gesture by Brora to host the cup final at such short notice. The surface at Dudgeon Park should encourage good football.”

In the only other match played, Halkirk United defeated Inverness Athletic 3-2 at Morrison Park.

Invergordon’s match against Orkney at the Recreation Grounds was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch, as was the match between Bunillidh Thistle and Bonar Bridge.
