The athlete, who represented Inverness Harriers, claimed gold in the two kilometre race when she crossed the line in a time of six minutes and 49 seconds.

She won the race 10 seconds clear of Edinburgh Athletic Club athlete Katie Johnson who was in second place with Jessie Gilchrist of Law and District who claimed the bronze medal one second behind.

Cairns (13), who won the Scottish under-13 cross country title earlier in the year, also won the River Ness 5k for the first time last month in a time of 18:25.

There was also success for her brother Lucas, who won team gold for the Inverness Harriers at the national championships.

He also came fourth in the under-17 3km race finishing the course in a time of 9:30.

Meanwhile, Tain athlete Constance Nankivell made it three consecutive team golds in three weeks with Edinburgh University as they dominated the senior women’s race.

The 19-year-old, who started her running career with East Sutherland Athletics Club, came 13th in the individual race with a time of 14:43.

She followed up her team success with Edinburgh University after being part of the team which won at the Scottish Student Cross Championships in Dundee seven days previously.

Fellow Tain athlete Alyth Gollan finished 10th in the under-17 girls 3k race in a time of 11:05.

Strathpeffer athlete Hamish Hickey claimed silver in the under-20’s men’s event and 16th overall when he finished the course in a time of 12:34.

Hickey, who was with Ross County Athletics Club and now studies at Stirling University, won team gold in the senior competition with Central Athletics Club.
