ANDREW Baird was crowned UK School Games champion when he claimed victory in the 1500 metres steeplechase.

The Fortrose Academy fifth year pupil stormed to victory when he claimed gold at Loughborough in a time of four minutes 18:02 seconds.

He was two seconds ahead of Freddie Rowe in 4:20.10 with Andrew Andesaya in third place in 4:23.53.

It followed up his impressive performances over the distance, including winning the School International Athletic Board Track and Field Championship in Wales in July.

Baird has only been competing in steeplechase for just over 12 months, but has quickly established himself as one of the most promising athletes for his age group.

He has already had success this year, winning the Scottish Schools 1500 Metres Championship.

He has been supported in attending events by the Highland Athlete Travel Awards Scheme.

He is a member of Ross County Athletics Club but he is trained by Inverness Harriers coach Ross Cairns.
